She says, “Maternity care is an area where nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives can make a real difference. Prevention and primary care is our specialty.” Dr. Stone is proud of FNU’s move from a small Kentucky-based school to a nationally accredited nursing university with over 1,500 students enrolled. FNU has the number one Nurse-Midwifery Program in the United States.
Dr. Marfell has been a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) for 21 years and a Registered Nurse for 35. She came to FNU with a passion to help grow the FNP program. During her time there, she has seen class sizes grow from 5 to more than 600 FNP students. Dr. Marfell’s goal to improve access to healthcare is what motivates her to educate future NPs and CNMs and provide healthcare services in her clinical practice. For Dr. Grace Ann Gibbs, the path to becoming a Doctor of Obstetrics and Gynecology was a little unusual. Just two days after graduating from high school, she left for the Air Force and spent eight years active duty in West Germany and Oklahoma City. She switched to the Air National Guard and became a full-time student. “I was working as a waitress part time, doing military training with the Iowa Air National Guard once a month and helping my husband raise our children,” she explained. “It was difficult, but I never gave up until I reached my goals.”

Dr. Tucker received his medical degree from University of South Alabama College of Medicine and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UK HealthCare. He will begin to see patients at the UK HealthCare-Georgetown clinic in July 2015 and deliver babies alongside Joseph Haynes, MD and Lauren Beaven, MD.

The Pediatric Endocrinology team at Kentucky Children’s Hospital is made up of four outstanding fellowship-trained physicians. These specialists evaluate and treat disorders of a child’s endocrine system that may result in growth problems, thyroid disorders or diabetes. The team is prepared to treat diabetes mellitus, adrenal gland disorders, problems of calcium metabolism and thyroid disorders. The team helps children and their families get through illnesses.
Jackson Smith, M.D. is a Pediatric Endocrinologist and Division Chief, Pediatric Endocrinology. He is also board-certified in internal medicine. Smith is an Associate Professor of medicine and pediatrics.
John Fowlkes, M.D. is a Pediatric Endocrinologist and Barnstable Brown Kentucky Diabetes and Obesity Center Endowed Chair and has done extensive research on diabetes and insulin-related growth factors.
Kathryn Thrailkill, M.D. is a Pediatric Endocrinologist and Barnstable Brown Chair in Pediatric Diabetes Research. She has authored many publications and is involved with several organizations in her field. Thrailkill and Fowlkes were named to the 2013 Best Doctors in America® list.
Alba Morales, M.D. is a Pediatric Endocrinologist and Associate Professor. She is heavily involved with diabetes-focused clinical initiatives and is partnering with providers to provide a telemedicine initiative for children with diabetes in northeastern Kentucky counties.
